What shipping a vehicle actually costs, how long it takes, what insurance covers, and how to prepare — answered plainly.
How much does car transportation cost?
Cost depends on distance, vehicle size and weight, whether the car runs, open versus enclosed transport, the season, and how busy the route is. A short regional move on an open trailer is the cheapest scenario; a coast-to-coast enclosed move of an inoperable vehicle is the most expensive. How long does it take to ship a car?
Carriers average roughly 400 to 500 miles per day once loaded. Regional moves usually take one to three days, cross-country moves seven to ten days. Pickup is typically scheduled within a few days of booking, faster on busy lanes.
Is my vehicle insured while it is being transported?
Yes. Every carrier we assign must have active cargo and liability insurance and valid FMCSA operating authority, and we verify both before your vehicle is booked. Personal items left inside the vehicle are not covered.
What is the difference between open and enclosed transport?
Open transport uses a multi-car hauler with no walls or roof. It is the cheapest and most widely available option and is how new cars are delivered to dealerships. Enclosed transport uses a fully covered trailer that protects the vehicle from weather and road debris; it costs more and is recommended for luxury, classic, exotic and low-clearance vehicles.
Can you ship a car that does not run?
Yes. Inoperable vehicles need a carrier with a winch and, in some cases, a lift gate. Mark the vehicle as inoperable when you request a quote so we assign the right equipment. There is a surcharge because loading takes longer.
Do I need to be present for pickup and delivery?
You or an authorized adult must be there at both ends to inspect the vehicle and sign the bill of lading. It can be a friend, family member, dealer or neighbor — just tell us who and give us their phone number in advance.
Can I leave personal belongings in the car?
Carriers are authorized to transport vehicles, not household goods, and items in the car are not covered by cargo insurance. Some drivers allow a small amount of weight in the trunk. Ask first, and never leave anything valuable or irreplaceable.
What is a freight broker, and why use one?
A broker arranges transport with vetted carriers instead of owning the trucks. That means access to a nationwide network rather than one company's routes, so you get better coverage, better pricing on your specific lane, and one point of contact who is accountable from pickup to delivery.
