Door-to-Door vs Terminal-to-Terminal Car Shipping

The two models describe where the vehicle changes hands. That single detail affects convenience, price and how much of your own time the move consumes.

Door-to-door, realistically

The carrier collects from and delivers as close to your address as the truck can legally and safely reach. A ten-car hauler is around 75 feet long, so narrow residential streets, low branches, tight cul-de-sacs and height-restricted parking structures often mean meeting the driver a few minutes away at a wide road or a large retail lot.

That is normal, not a downgrade — and agreeing to it in advance keeps your pickup on schedule.

Terminal-to-terminal

You drop the vehicle at a storage yard and collect it from another yard near the destination. It can suit long lead times or awkward schedules, but it adds handling, your own driving at both ends, and often storage fees per day. Terminal coverage has also thinned considerably as door-to-door became the norm.

Which to pick

For nearly every private move, door-to-door is faster, involves fewer people touching the car and usually costs the same or less once storage and your own travel are counted. Terminals are worth discussing only when neither end of your move has a workable pickup point or your dates are highly uncertain.

  • Door-to-door: fewer handoffs, no storage fees, least effort from you
  • Terminal: flexible drop-off timing, but extra handling, driving and possible daily storage

Tell us about access up front

If your street is narrow, gated, or inside a height-restricted structure, mention it when you request the quote. We plan the meeting point in advance instead of the driver discovering the problem on the day.

Frequently asked

Will the truck come to my house?

As close as it can legally and safely get. Large haulers cannot enter many residential streets, so a nearby wide road or large parking lot is often used as the meeting point.

Is terminal shipping cheaper?

Rarely, once storage fees and your own driving at both ends are included. Door-to-door is the standard for most private moves.
